Every year all four of our kindergarten classes "hatch" chicken eggs in an incubator in their general ed classroom. As you can well imagine, once those baby chicks start to peck their way out of the eggs there is little else those kids can talk about. This project is perfect for that important week. While we make our chickens we discuss the importance of a horizon line, the different shapes needed, bigger vs. smaller, we practice folding,we practice with liquid glue and scissors. Of course all of that is nothing compared to the excitement of gluing on the feathers! This project is one of the few kindergarten projects that I do that takes more than one class period to complete, and the chickens turn out splendid-every time!
The first week we paint the backgrounds for the chickens during that time we discuss horizon lines and how important it is to paint from one edge of the paper to the other.

| If a child misses the painting week we simply use blue and green construction paper for the background. Not as much "fun" but it does get the job done. |
