This project helps the kids learn where to put things on their paper to make them seem "more real", the addition of shadows creates even more realism.  We use three lines-one diagonal, one vertical, and one horizontal, to create the illusion of a corner.  By drawing our objects both above and below the horizon line the objects now appear to be in the room, or on the shelf, rather than stuck to the wall.  By the time a student is coloring the drawing many of them cannot believe how realistic their drawings look.  These techniques will be used again and again by the kids, not only for future assignments but also during early finisher time.

 Projects in progress.  The students are allowed to choose at least two different art supplies for their objects, also the designs on the side and back walls and the "shelf" in the picture are original to each student.

Giving the students different options for the objects and "walls" ensures that their own creativity and personality come through in the project.

We used colored pencils for this project-which means the kids get lots of practice sharpening their pencils
